Answering some questions...

Holz & Sohne (HolzSohne for short, pronounced "whole zona")... what the heck?!?

I put a lot of thought into this. I wanted a name that had meaning to me and didn't care where it would show up in a alphabetically sorted list or how easy it was to spell. I knew I wanted to involve my kids somehow and I wanted it to evoke a certain feelings or meanings to me. Meanings that would help me stay focused and remind me of who I am and where I came from.

I'm married to a lovely, mostly German lady (her mother hails from Hamburg (where the photo on this page was taken, btw)) so I chose to use german to say, essentially, Woods and Sons. German, the language and customs more so than the country, has been a part of my life for 20 some odd years. I'm not fluent but I try to keep what I've learned. And who doesn't like sauerbraten, wienerschnitzel, sweet red cabbage, kartoffel salat (a warmed, vinegary, bacon-e, potato-e concoction of the gods), sausages, brotchen (hard-crusted, chewy and soft on the inside rolls) or... So the use of German is meaningful. (and is making me hungry right now)

Now there's also meaning in the framework of the name "Woods and Sons". In my family on my mothers' side (Dobson) there was family construction business named, Dobson and Sons. It just seemed right to mimic the naming structure because it symbolizes, to me, an ideal business. A father and sons doing what they do best, together. For personal reasons the visualization of a father working with his sons (or daughters) is perfection. It reminds me that I'm doing this to not only better myself but also my children. And it reminds me of childhood and the good memories I have growing up around that business.

So I couldn't think of a better way to honor my family and what my family means to me by naming my business what I did.

Make sense now?
